Roots and Fruits
Roots and Fruits is a Community Gardening Project based at the Rockwell Centre. Our aims are to encourage more people to grow their own food, raise awareness of environmental issues and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Our community allotments are used by local residents and groups to grow vegetables in raised beds and the fresh produce is also used by the Rockwell Café.
We maintain the Thorpe Edge Community Garden which includes a willow dome, a mini-beach area, fruit trees, wildflowers and bushes. The Garden is also used for outdoor play activities, community festivals, social events and picnics.
The Garden is also home to a wide range of insects, birds and wildlife which we encourage through the re-creation of natural habitats. One of the main attractions in the Allotment are the Rockwell Chickens which regularly produce a good supply of fresh eggs. We also have a wildlife pond and Bee hives.
We have a Young Roots and Fruits Project to engage and encourage children and young people to get interested in growing food, the environment and wildlife.
Thorpe Edge Community Garden
The Garden is situated next to the Rockwell Centre and is being developed by local people, with support from Thorpe Edge Community Project, as a bio-diverse community resource.
The Garden includes community allotments with raised plant beds that can be used by all ages and abilities.
It offers a flexible grassed area with paths, seating, a stage area, fire pit, sand pit and a pizza oven that can be used for a range of outdoor activities including playschemes, festivals and picnics.
The Garden has extensive wildflower areas, fruit trees and bushes that create a natural habitat for a wide range of insects, birds and animals.
The garden now has an outdoor kitchen are linked to the Rockwell Centre and future plans include creating more habitat for wildlife including bats and hedgehogs.
